Introduction
The miter gate is used as navigation lock gates and comprises two rotating leaves with vertical hinge axes located in the lock chamber walls. The miter gate is simple compared to other types of flood gates in terms of construction, operation and can be opened and closed more rapidly.
Description
In the closed position, the leaves meet at the centre of the lock, supporting one another on the free ends. In the open position, the miter gate leaves fit into the recesses built in the chamber side walls. Milter gates are framed either horizontally or vertically.
For horizontal framing, the entire water load is transmitted through the girders and bearings to the concrete walls while the vertical framing of the load is carried by the top gate girder and transmitted to the wall and the other part is carried directly to the gate sill.
